A Contemporary Conversation

This form of post -modern dance, developed in the late 19th century, is a direct opposing response to genres like jazz and classical ballet.  Choreographers and dancers became revolutionaries in their craft as they explored unconventional movements that were gathered from numerous different dance genres.  The contrast lies where ballet is comprised of rigid, fixed moves and body placement, while conversely, contemporary is dynamic and fluid, shifting alignments, and possessing an aura of rawness.  It pushes the limitations of our own human form and physical capabilities.  Improvisation is common to this avant-garde style of dance.  Its origins can be traced specifically to choreographers like Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, and Isadora Duncan, and it continues to evolve with each performance.

Our contemporary program defies even the revolutionary mindset by fusing modern jazz back into the dance.  It’s unpredictable. It’s breathtaking.  It’s therapeutic. It’s awesome.
